How to Survive Your First TYPO3 Developer Days

Developer Days are just around the corner, and for the TYPO3 community, it's our highly anticipated event of the year. It's a week where everyone comes together and reconnects in the picturesque city of Karlsruhe. As a first-time attendee, I am eager to make the most of this experience and fully prepare for my first Developer Days. To help me prepare, we reached out to seasoned community members for their advice on how to maximize the benefits of this annual event. Here’s what we gathered.

“I Remember My First Developer Days…”

The community spans from Dev Day veterans to newcomers, encompassing everything in between. We thoroughly enjoyed reading the diverse range of responses, which included both practical essentials and fun advice.

First, let’s cover the essentials. As this will be multiple days filled with talks, technical workshops and networking, it’s important to keep in mind the necessities that will set you up for success. Most importantly and reiterated amongst the community: the GenoHotel does not have air conditioning in the private rooms! You’ve been warned. Since our hotel rooms don't have air conditioning and the weather is expected to be quite warm, we recommend packing light, breathable clothing. Additionally, consider bringing along some extra t-shirts. This will ensure everyone stays comfortable and can fully enjoy the event!

    Essentials

    • Pack accordingly! There will be a lot of information to take in! As one community member reminded us, don’t forget to pack the essentials including your laptop, toothbrush, deodorant (it’s going to be hot!), cell phone, cash for the drink machine, and most importantly, a good attitude!
    • Make sure your equipment meets the prerequisite to participate. Visit the workshop page to ensure your machine is ready. Generally speaking, you’ll need a machine that’s set up and ready to run a local instance of TYPO3.
    • Power up! Don’t forget to pack your power adapters, dongles, chargers, etc.
    • Prepare for heat! As we’ve said, there is no A/C at the GenoHotel and it gets hot at the Developer Days. Make sure you’re prepared to beat the heat and stay fresh! Hydrate! As always, it will be hot in Karlsruhe this August and you’ll want to make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day.

    Now, the Fun Stuff!

As our resident Developer Days expert Tom Warwick suggested, don’t forget your dancing shoes! While we could have included this in the essentials, we wanted to remind you that the DevDays are meant to be fun, too!

    Coding Night & Breathing Workshop

“Come with fun, joy and in a good mood.”

    Ralf Merz

While this a professional opportunity, there is an undeniable fun, social element to the DevDays which makes this the highlight of the year for our community. After talking with participants from years past, here are some of their suggestions for how to survive the fun parts of the week.

    • If you’re feeling like you need to move, don’t despair! The GenoHotel has a gym at your disposal. Additionally, Stefan Völker, a certified breathwork trainer, is offering 30-minute sessions on stress resilience and performance. Learn the connection between breathing and the nervous system, and practice simple, relaxing exercises. Don’t miss it!
    • As with every DevDays, there will be a party! Don’t forget to pack your dancing shoes and prepare to let loose after a few days of serious business. We hope to see you on the dance floor Saturday night!
    • If you’re looking to explore, don’t forget that the city center is accessible. Explore Karlsruhe in your free time or try a nearby restaurant for a change of pace. Tom suggests Reinhards—a nice dinner spot within walking distance.
    • Branch out and sit next to someone new! One of the common responses we received was to go outside of your network, eat lunch with someone you don’t know or attend a talk outside of your organization.
    • Ask questions and fold into the community! They are a welcoming bunch who want new people to feel included and welcome. The community is there for you with open arms
    • You don’t want to miss the coding night. As one community member said, even if the day is long, you don’t want to miss this opportunity. Plan accordingly if you can!

    Your Room is Your Refuge

Recharge, refuel, rejoin! As with any event, there will be a lot of information to take in and social interactions to be had. The GenoHotel is where everything takes place and your room is in close proximity for a quick retreat. If you feel you need to recharge the social batteries, take a shower or decompress, you are never far from that opportunity. Having your room nearby is also convenient for a power nap if needed!
