ELTS is now available for TYPO3 version 7! We encourage everyone to update and upgrade to the newest versions of TYPO3, but it’s not always immediately possible for every website. Each long-term support (LTS) version of TYPO3 has a guaranteed 3-year community support period. TYPO3 GmbH offers up to three further years of support through its Extended Long-Term Support (ELTS) program. Ensure your TYPO3 v7 website or application is secure and fully compatible with modern browsers; sign up for ELTS today.
The TYPO3 community publishes a new LTS (long-term support) version of its open source CMS every 18 months. Each version has a regular maintenance period of three years. The two current versions are TYPO3 v8 and v9 LTS.
TYPO3 v7.6 LTS was released in November 2015. And according to plan, it’s been supported by the core team for the last three years. Alongside numerous ongoing usability and performance improvements, TYPO3 v7 introduced the reliable, predictable release-planning process still in place today.
Since TYPO3 v7 LTS, each subsequent release has come out with scheduled periods of regular maintenance, priority bug fixes, and finally, the Extended Long Term Support period which you can see in the TYPO3 development roadmap.
The average lifespan of a website between major changes and overhauls is reportedly 2 years 7 months. If an organization can get value out of a website for more than three years, it’s getting an above average return on its investment. Longer guaranteed maintenance periods mean TYPO3 CMS delivers better ROI—more savings, more value for your investment.
Just because TYPO3 continues to develop new features and releases doesn’t negate the benefits of earlier releases. TYPO3 v7 is still a great fit for many organizations who for various reasons can’t or won’t be upgrading certain sites to newer versions. If it’s working, why fix it?
On the other hand, the core team can’t support each TYPO3 CMS version forever, and that’s where the Extended Long-Term Support period comes in. This allows those who do use TYPO3 v7 to invest in resources and fund the maintenance of this version. It ensures their websites still work and are safe from security threats.
When you compare the costs of upgrading and redesign, the cost of yearly Extended Support is just the right fit for many sites. This subscription model keeps the total cost of ownership low and extends the initial investment. This service guarantees support for these systems for up to six years. And now, Extended Long Term Support (ELTS) for TYPO3 v7 LTS is available.
While there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to maintaining your website and keeping it safe, when a release moves into the ELTS phase, TYPO3 GmbH guarantees maintenance for an additional three year period. During ELTS, we backport security patches to make sure your website is secure and updated as issues are discovered and fixed in newer versions. ELTS also includes ongoing browser compatibility improvements just like the newest TYPO3 versions, so you can be sure your website or web application will keep working in modern browsers. ELTS keeps you up-to-date and legally compliant. In many jurisdictions, legal frameworks like the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) make website owners liable for security problems and infractions if their software is not up-to-date.
ELTS can be booked for a single year or for up to three years, giving you a total support period of six years altogether for a given LTS version (currently v6 or v7).
