A Leader in Public Utilities

Statdtwerke Ratingen is a municipal energy company in Ratingen, Germany. The company supplies electricity, natural gas, heating, drinking water, and telecommunications services to the locality, and is staffed by roughly 300 employees, making it an invaluable member of its community and a major player in the public utilities industry.

When the company decided to revamp its website in order to deliver visitors a more modern experience, it partnered with KM2 >>.

Alongside the agency, who has a long history delivering successful TYPO3-based projects, Stadtwerke Ratingen successfully turned its site into an engaging, interactive representation of the company’s services and product portfolio, all the while maintaining high performance levels.

Key Outcomes

Supreme Interactivity

Featuring a digital house where visitors navigate through a model home, exploring the company’s product portfolio and service rates.

Editorial Efficiency

Editors can now add and update content quickly and easily thanks to a simplified website structure, meaning faster content delivery and alignment with consumer needs.

Boost in Visibility

Visitors and customers alike responded positively to the changes, as reflected by improved engagement metrics and website traffic.

Meeting Customer Demands with an Interactive Website

The Stadtwerke Ratingen website was in need of an overhaul in order to successfully meet the shifting demands of customers. The previous website was deemed too static and fragmented to adequately meet modern consumer requirements, with its limited interactivity and long click paths making navigation challenging and finding specific content a time consuming ordeal.

Optimized navigation, the implementation of a modern design, and an improved content structure were key objectives that would need to be fulfilled in order to deliver website visitors a satisfactory digital experience.

Working with TYPO3 for Engaging Web Experiences

TYPO3 was selected as the CMS of choice for this project due to Stadwerke Ratingen’s familiarity with it. The company has run its backend on an older version of the website and its staff’s familiarity with the solution was among the factors that made it an ideal choice.

When assessing the infrastructure needs and capabilities required to successfully overhaul the website, there were a number of key considerations that led to TYPO3 being deemed ideal for the task. These were its easy integration of external tools for the tariff section, its flexibility and ease of use for editors, the wide range of available content elements, and its potential for continued development.

“From the very beginning, the KM2 >> team were reliable and creative partners by our side. The collaboration was consistently constructive, solution-oriented, and characterized by clear project management. The result speaks for itself: a modern, user-friendly website that meets both user experience expectations and the requirements of a well-structured backend.”

Delivering Top-Tier Web Solutions for Public Utilities

Stadwerke Ratingen aimed to achieve a comprehensive design system based on Atomic Design Principles that would enable consistent implementation and future development. These included four specific menu fly-outs and third-level navigation, search, and login functions. A key objective was the implementation of a “home tour” as a product experience, along with a variety of customer-centric elements for the clear presentation of information, and a simple yet flexible backend that would enable efficient content editing and integration with external tools.

  • Digital house and interactive navigation

The centerpiece of the new website was the digital house. This interactive experience allows visitors to embark on a “home tour” where they can intuitively navigate through a digital home and explore Stadtwerke Ratingen’s service offering and rates. Furthermore, the tour includes informational content regarding the company’s services, and allows visitors unmatched access to vital information, including the ability to calculate their own consumption rates before receiving an accurate quote.

  • Simplified backend structure

The backend experience was greatly improved thanks to a simplified site structure that made editing and managing content more efficient. This led to faster content updates and better alignment with visitor needs.

  • Unparalleled user experience with TYPO3

Both the digital house and improved content structure enabled an improved user experience. The expanded navigation capabilities along with the more efficient content structure mean that visitors are able to review important content, such as product offering and tariff rates quickly and easily, shortening the sales funnel and delivering a holistic experience to potential customers.

Increasing Traffic and Customer Satisfaction with a New Website

The impact of the new website has been felt both in terms of feedback and traffic rates. With regards to the former, both customers and website visitors have validated the new website with positive feedback, praising its interactivity and improved user experience.

Website visits have also noticeably increased, with the new site driving improved user engagement. As a reflection of the great work done, and to the project’s impact, the website won a 2024 TYPO3 Award in the “Small Medium Business” category.

The new website is a testament to the KM2 >> team’s expertise and to TYPO3’s unparalleled flexibility when it comes to creating custom solutions for companies across industries.
