TYPO3 Powers AIDA Cruises’ Digital Evolution
A 20-Year Success Story
In 2002, AIDA Cruises, Germany’s market leader in the cruise industry, began a digital journey that would span two decades and counting. The challenge was to create and maintain a robust online presence that could adapt to evolving digital requirements while supporting the complex needs of a major cruise line with 15,000 employees from 50 countries.
AIDA required a partner who could navigate these challenges with them, providing innovative solutions and reliable support. Netresearch DTT GmbH, leveraging the power of TYPO3, emerged as the ideal collaborator for this long-term project. Starting with 360° panoramic photography of AIDA’s ships, the partnership grew to encompass a wide range of digital solutions. TYPO3’s flexibility and scalability proved crucial in developing and maintaining various portals, from the main AIDA website to specialized platforms for travel agents and internal communications.
TYPO3’s enterprise-level capabilities have been instrumental in handling AIDA’s complex requirements. With features like multisite management, robust content editing, and seamless API integrations, TYPO3 has provided a solid foundation for AIDA’s digital presence. Meanwhile, Netresearch’s expertise in implementing and customizing TYPO3 has ensured that AIDA stays at the forefront of digital innovation in the cruise industry.
Pioneering Online Booking in the Cruise Industry
One of the first major milestones in the AIDA-Netresearch partnership was the development of the AIDA Internet Booking Engine (IBE) in 2009. At a time when online booking was still a novelty in the cruise industry, AIDA took a bold step forward.
Netresearch implemented the IBE using TYPO3, leveraging its content management capabilities to handle translations, contextual help, and other crucial content. This solution not only positioned AIDA as an industry pioneer but also laid the groundwork for future digital innovations.
Unifying the Onboard Experience
In 2014, AIDA faced the challenge of consolidating various onboard systems into a single, cross-device platform to enhance passenger experience. Netresearch, in collaboration with kreuzwerker GmbH, rose to the occasion with a comprehensive TYPO3-based solution.
The resulting portal on board AIDA's ships became a central hub for passengers, offering real-time information and services. TYPO3’s flexibility allowed for the creation of a responsive design that worked across various devices, ensuring that guests could access the portal from their smartphones, tablets, or cabin computers.
Dockerization and Continuous Deployment
As the partnership between AIDA and Netresearch matured, so did the technical solutions. In 2014, faced with the unique challenges of deploying updates to ships at sea, Netresearch implemented a pioneering Dockerization strategy.
This innovative approach allowed for automatic deployments without manual intervention from the onboard IT department. It solved the dual challenges of limited internet connectivity on the high seas and the security restrictions preventing external developers from directly accessing the ships’ entertainment systems.
Streamlining Communication and Sales: AIDA Intranet and Expinet
As AIDA Cruises expanded its operations, the need for robust internal communication and efficient sales support became paramount. Netresearch rose to the challenge, harnessing TYPO3's versatility to develop two pivotal platforms: the AIDA Intranet and AIDA Expinet.
In 2015, Netresearch unveiled the revamped AIDA Intranet, designed to connect AIDA’s 15,000 employees across land and sea. This responsive platform offers seamless data synchronization and efficient content management through a customized TYPO3 backend. With robust user authentication, the intranet ensures secure access from various devices, fostering improved information sharing across the fleet.
Building on this success, Netresearch tackled the relaunch of AIDA Expinet in 2020, transforming it into a powerful B2B portal for travel agencies. This project showcased innovative web development, combining Vue.js for the frontend with custom TYPO3 extensions and Solr search integration. The result is a user-friendly platform that equips travel agents with efficient booking tools, easy access to sales materials, and enhanced search capabilities.
Both platforms integrate with third-party systems, including booking engines, CRM, job portals, and authentication services.
