Klühspies is one of Germany’s largest providers of school trips and group travel packages. The travel company aims to present its wide range of travel offerings in a clear and target-group-oriented way through a modernized, user-friendly online presence.

To maintain its optimized digital presence, increase brand visibility, and ensure that mobile users would benefit from a positive browsing experience, it partnered with mindshape to relaunch its website in 2024.

The project’s central focus was the implementation of a flexible and scalable system that maximized added value for Klühspies’ team, and that delivered users an optimal browsing experience. 

To accomplish this, mindshape sought an innovative solution that would bring about the anticipated results. These results would be represented in parts of the website including the Travel Guide, Trip Finder, Travel Itinerary Tool and Trip Detail Page, all of whose optimization or implementation would be crucial to the project’s success.

TYPO3 Version Upgrade

The website was upgraded to TYPO3 v11.5 and the attention of the mindshape team shifted to the work ahead, building a truly scalable website that would prioritize a clear UX, searchability and SEO excellence, along with on-site navigation upgrades. 

Technical Excellence with a Modular Development Approach

To ensure the site would maximize performance and allow for an optimal user experience, the mindshape team adopted a modular development approach. This meant that JavaScript and CSS modules were only loaded on the pages where they were actually needed. 

Adopting such an approach improved the website’s overall usability and performance. The use of Lazyloading, responsive and WebP images, and the JavaScript and CSS modular solutions, along with a full-faceted text search tool, which was based on Solr, enabled real-time searches and impressive content delivery speeds. 

With these on-page improvements, along with a number of SEO-focused upgrades that maximized Klühspies’ ability to connect with new audiences, the relaunch delivered a holistic improvement to the website, both for visitors and the Klühspies team.

Delivering an Optimized Website for Search Engines with TYPO3

The changes made to the website were centered on important new additions, along with upgrades to existing infrastructure. These included: 

  • Travel Guide: As an SEO priority, an extensive travel guide was introduced, serving as a content hub and specifically generating traffic through organic search queries. This highlights Klühspies’ knowledge and expertise in the field of travel and group trips.
     
  • Trip Finder: With filter and radius search options, users can browse trips according to their individual needs and geographic preferences in either list or map view (Google Maps clustering).
     
  • Travel Inquiry Tool: A multi-step inquiry form offering tailored travel advice to users was combined with a dynamic suggestion feature, a progress bar, and shopping cart functionality.
     
  • Trip Detail Page: On individual trip detail pages, a dynamic travel configurator allows users to customize their trips as they wish, ensuring maximum flexibility.
     
  • Travel Configurator: Creates value in the portal by enabling visitors to find relevant trips while easily navigating through the website and using its search function.

In addition to these new features, the website is also served by a Google API integration that ensures crucial data such as trips and accommodation are always up-to-date. 

End users benefit from excellent loading times, and a mobile-first approach that ensures the website’s content is navigable regardless of the type of device used to access it.
