Based in Vienna, SCHRACK Technik GmbH (SCHRACK) is a leading technology company that provides innovative solutions in the fields of electrical engineering, energy, industry, and IT. Since its founding in 1920, the company has grown into a multinational enterprise with operations in over 16 countries, a comprehensive sales network in Central Europe, and a product range of approximately 180,000 products online, which it promotes through a combination of direct sales, local store, and a high-performance online shop, making it a trailblazer in the e-commerce space.
The company has been using TYPO3 as the basis for its website since 2005, and has worked with plan2net over the last 20 years as a strategic technology partner. With the agency leading the evolution of the company’s web presence, playing a key role in making SCHRACK into the high-performance e-commerce leader it is today.
One of the highlights of this long-term relationship has been the development of a new, high-performance web shop for SCHRACK.
Challenge
As a globally operating electrical engineering company with roughly 60,000 items in its product range and over 180,000 products online, SCHRACK needed more than just a simple web shop to keep pace with its needs.
Demands on the system were high, and the revamped web shop would have to deliver the following results:
- Global Scalability: Centralized management of 16 countries and markets in 14 languages.
- Performance and Availability: 24/7 operation with ongoing updates, high data volumes, and complex technical product parameters.
- System complexity: Seamless integration of product data, editorial content and real-time search without breaks in user experience.
- Efficiency: Reduction of manual effort in editorial departments and product management.
“This project was embedded in a strategy of our company that aims to sharpen our strengths and USPs and to make market segments and markets accessible to us that were not reachable in the past.”
Norbert Kasper, Co-owner & former IT Manager (SCHRACK Technik)
Works Performed
Such a highly interconnected system architecture was far beyond the tasks of a traditional CMS. Luckily, with TYPO3’s extensive feature offering and scalability, the plan2net and SCHRACK teams were able to deliver impactful results.
Deep Integration
TYPO3 was tightly integrated with Magento, an e-commerce solution and Apache Solr, a search engine. This created a seamless frontend for customers browsing the web shop. Data exchanges took place via clearly defined interfaces, and editors were able to work in as few source systems as possible.
Automated Content Logic
- SEO blocks: Product text from product management enriched with marketing/SEO texts directly in TYPO3 and displayed automatically on technical shop category pages.
- CIP Module: Automated creation of technical product catalogs (PDF) directly from TYPO3 data structures for all languages and branches. An incredible service for the technical customer base of SCHRACK.
Enterprise-grade Quality Assurance
User of automated GitLab pipelines, visual regression tests, and a dual-server deployment system for maximum security.
Headless Architecture
The web shop was transformed into a modern React frontend solution, where TYPO3 acts as a headless system via content APIs.
“I've had excellent experiences with plan2net. From my perspective, the collaboration was always based on partnership.”
Norbert Kasper, Co-owner & former IT Manager (SCHRACK Technik) - 2026
Outcome
Through consistent further development of its open source strategy, SCHRACK was able to consolidate its position as a technology market leader.
The impact of the project are visible in a series important metrics:
- Approximately €560 million in annual revenue, a third of which is generated through digital channels.
- Approximately 60,000 active and a total of around 180,000 web shop products that can be searched and ordered around the clock.
- Full-proof foundation for the revenue target of €1 billion through scalable microservices.
