The Berlinische Galerie is Berlin’s State Museum for Modern Art, Photography and Architecture. It’s one of the youngest museums in the capital and is dedicated to art created in Berlin from 1870 to the present day. The museum offers a look at the city’s evolving art scene, located in a converted industrial building in vibrant Kreuzberg.
3pc GmbH partnered with the Berlinische Galerie to relaunch their website for a second time. The goal was to view this digital space as an online extension of the museum. From shaping the online strategy to crafting the design, storytelling, and TYPO3 implementation, 3pc drove the transformation that brought this vision to life.
This project won the 2025 TYPO3 award in the category of Legacy and Heritage.
Project Details
The Berlinische Galerie’s revamped platform combines user-centered navigation with lively, dynamic storytelling. The website acts as a gateway to the institution and its presence contributes to the increasing reach and international visibility. The digital space strengthens the museum’s image and further positions it as a modern, contemporary institution.
Thanks to TYPO3, efficient processes take place in the background, including the automation of events moving from the calendar to review, in addition to interfaces enabling the import of selected works of art from the “collection area” online. Editorial workflows are optimized through TYPO3’s backend, ensuring independent work without high follow-up costs. The long-term use of TYPO3 has offered sustainable cost benefits.
The project is sustainably developed in various ways. From a technical standpoint, the website was developed optimally to achieve lean loading times despite image-heavy content. With a clear contribution to performance and CO₂ reduction, the website is also hosted on climate-friendly, green electricity-based servers. The long-standing commitment to using TYPO3 ensures unnecessary waste of resources that accompany frequent system changes are avoided.
Outcome
This project serves as a great use case for TYPO3 in the museum and cultural sector—proving how a digital platform can support sustainably. The consistent implementation, according to accessibility efforts, offers the TYPO3 community value references for barrier-free web development. Due to its long-standing use of TYPO3, it’s clear that TYPO3 is a future-proof solution for projects spanning more than ten years.
