SkillDisplay - The Skills of TYPO3 v10

Thanks to Christina from SkillDisplay for sharing!

The TYPO3 v10 skills are here, so this is the perfect time to get up-to-date and revise skills that you are not 100% up to date with! Thank you to Marc Willmann, lead of the TYPO3 Education Committee, for giving insights about all involved participants and the update of the SkillSets from v9 to v10, with certifications to follow!

Topics in this blog post cover:

  • Who was involved?
  • The modification of the workflow
  • The new skills of TYPO3 v10
  • Preparing for a certificate
  • Online and offline certificates

Who was involved?

The TYPO3 Education Committee decided to create task forces (teams), which execute their tasks independently in parallel.

People involved include, but are not limited to:

  • TYPO3 CMS Certified Editor (TCCE): Tom Novotny, Andreas Fießer
  • TYPO3 CMS Certified Integrator (TCCI): Oliver Thiele, Michael Schams
  • TYPO3 CMS Certified Developer (TCCD): Andreas Wolf, Armin Vieweg, Oliver Klee
  • TYPO3 CMS Certified Consultant (TCCC): Boris Hinzer, Andreas Wolf, Peter Pröll, Larissa Schlein (new member)

Also a special thanks also to Daniel Siepmann from the TYPO3 Documentation Team, who is the interface between the two teams. Daniel helps by creating (or delegating) documentation for topics that are covered in the certifications and would be useful for the community.

The Modification of the Workflow

Since TYPO3 v7, the workflow has adapted iteratively over the following versions, as SkillDisplay has been integrated tighter to the process, Marc told. Formerly, the syllabus was the initial document; the education committee discussed which skills would be useful for the syllabus and created questions for the certificates.

SkillDisplay is introduced

The first time the TYPO3 Education Committee used SkillDisplay, the syllabus and SkillTree were created in parallel. By comparing the syllabus with the SkillTree, first logical errors in the syllabus wording and composition were resolved.

SkillTree before syllabus

For the next version, the SkillTree was created before the syllabus, which increased the quality and made the whole workflow faster according to Marc. Back in the days, the syllabus needed to be copied from the platform manually, but in the meantime the SkillDisplay platform implemented a download function to automatically render the syllabus of any available set of skills.

Difference of two versions

The possibility of showing the difference of two certification curriculums is also a great gain for everyone, as users are able to pinpoint the skills they have to obtain for the new version.

Preparing for a Certification

Marc told us that by preparing for official TYPO3 certification, you ensure to have a comprehensive overview of skills needed for working with the CMS in the respective area. This makes using TYPO3 easier for you in the future. Several resources are available:

  • Books
  • Trainings
  • Lectures
  • Workshops
  • SkillDisplay

He mentioned that the SkillDisplay platform is a great tool for everyone who likes to learn independently. You can see what progress you made and get links for resources to gain more knowledge about the certain skill, including the official TYPO3 documentation links.

Getting Certified - Online or Offline

When you think you learned enough and are ready for the exam, there are two options: Either online in an exam environment, or offline at a TYPO3 Camp or other event, like it was possible at the recent TYPO3 Camp Vienna.

Online

To get certified online, the following resources  are of interest:

  • Order your ticket online for the TCCE, TCCI, TCCD or TCCC and make sure to look at the TYPO3 version (currently, you can do an exam in TYPO3 v9.5). Afterwards, you can get your exam voucher here.
  • The software used as an online exam environment is ProctorU, which provides live and automated online proctoring services. This means that your screen will be tracked, as well as a webcam needs to be installed to make sure that there is nobody else in the room and your identity will be checked, so you need a valid ID.
  • The online certification exam is a multiple-choice test that consists of 50 questions from various topics. You will have 60 minutes time and need to at least answer 37 questions correctly.

Offline

The face-to-face certification option will still be available, as some people prefer this environment. Just choose your favourite TYPO3 event that offers exams and register for it! Be aware, that due to the pandemic there are fewer events hosted. Please check Eventbrite for availability!

Learn something new!

Now it’s time to look at the new TYPO3 v10 skills, learn something new and verify them to get up to date or even ready for an exam!
