TYPO3 is developed with a mixture of funds from TYPO3 Association memberships and donations given freely from users, typically consultancies that set aside a percentage of the final price of their commercial TYPO3 projects.

In general, the community contributes by volunteering their spare time to work on the project, or companies using or benefiting from TYPO3 give some of their developer's time as a part of their work with TYPO3.

The original project founder and chief programmer, Kasper Skårhøj, has been funded by donations until he handed over the development leadership of TYPO3 to the Core team and 5.0 project in April 2007. You can still donate to Kasper if you wish to acknowledge the work he did in the past. However, if your intension is to enable new development, please consider to donate to a core team member, a 5.0 project member or any other active person in the TYPO3 community you believe makes a difference. Especially people on the core team who are working on the 4.x branch and security needs support since most of the TYPO3 Association budget is already allocated to 5.0 development. The TYPO3 association also accepts donations if you would like them to distribute it for you.

As a web agency using TYPO3, it would be good practice to donate a percentage or fixed amount of the price you are charging for the customer solution to the development of TYPO3. Traditionally such donations have been in the range of 300-1000 EURO. However, any amount is appreciated.

Donations are not payment for TYPO3. TYPO3 is free and free of charge. Development is voluntary, except if specifically sponsored. By donating you do not earn any specific rights over others, but you do encourage the volunteers working on the project so they might continually invest in it with their spare time!
